in a recent talk on the german perl workshop, Yves Orton pointed out  
that up to and including Perl 5.8 the '[|]' character class is far  
less efficient than using literals like '\|'. This will change in  
Perl 5.10., where single-character-containing character classes are  
treated as literals.

This is an argument for me to prefer the literal syntax over using  
character classes.
